The house in good taste Elsie De Wolfe 9781178016406 Books

This is a fun period piece and a look into another era. Elsie doesn't like central heating but prefers an open fire to heat each room . I guess she had the staff to make that feasible ! Her love of pale colors and simple window coverings is surprisingly modern considering she is writing these articles in the Edwardian era. Worth a look.

This is De Wolfe's first book on her style. She writes in a very pithy and sometimes humorous manner. It is a good contrast with earlier books on decor.
good
Must read for a decor lover.
A classic for anybody looking to follow civilized guidelines in choosing colors, fabrics & furniture that will work well under any circumstances
Elsie De Wolfe is acknowleged as the first woman to make a fortune as a decorator and can be called the first life style maven of the 20th century. Her opinions on home decor were eagerly seized upon by millions of aspirational women around the country. She wrote The House in Good Taste 90 years ago but it's just as fresh and suitable now as it was then.
I can't bring myself to agree with her on patchwork quilts, lace curtains or rocking chairs but she's absolutely correct in her advice on wallpaper, paint and apartments. It's amazing how much this delightful and informative book still has to teach us.
This is a directly useful collection of magazine articles that have been well organized into a book and published originally in 1913, and then republished in 2005. I read it first cover to cover but am re-reading each chapter in detail making design notes for remodeling my current home, and will also use when designing the next. It's about how to design, trim, and furnish a house to make it beautiful, useful and livable, and its VASTLY more useful than anything you see on HD's bookshelf's. It's the only reference of how to properly use picture rail that I've found. Wilkinson has inserted a few footnotes that help to understand de Wolfe's viewpoints. The text is written in a conversational and feminine tone that's enjoyable - a talented woman just talking to you. There's a strong correlation between this book and "The Decoration of Houses" by Wharton and Codman which I recommend too. There's dozens of references that were unknown to me so I kept a brouser open while reading. She's directed me to a few interesting publications, historic homes, and artists that were new. Apparently based on comments from others the original had color illustrations; all of the illustrations in this edition are B&W. Overall, the book is two afternoons or mornings of very enjoyable and beneficial reading plus it's a guide that I'll keep handy on my Favorites shelf.
IT'S A CLASSIC AND SEEMS FUNNY TODAY. WRITTEN FOR THE ELITE OF A FORMER AGE.
