When Joe first heard Kate's voice decades ago in college, it was love at first sound. Kate was also beautiful, smart and gracious. They actually did fall in love, they got married and life was good. But something was not right, and it's hard to put one's finger on the exact problem as the compact chapters of this well-written book stream by. Joe works in the R&D lab for a cosmetics company. Kate, 58, wants very much to maintain her beauty. This sounds like a promising match, right?The centerpiece of this St. Louis based story is Joe's discovery of a stunningly promising chemical "fountain of youth," and the use he makes of it. I'm hesitant to say much more, because I don't want to become a spoiler. I will say that the author does an excellent job of acquainting the reader with the characters that populate this book to the point that, in my case, they become people in my life. Their joys and hurdles become MY joys and hurdles. As I got closer to them, though, I then felt ever-increasing tension and experienced a concern that drove me on through the pages of this vivid character story.
Just as in real life, dysfunction that ferments beneath the surface will ultimately express itself, and the main question is how that will occur. Will it be recognized and grappled with, or will those affected ignore the bubbling ferment, allowing it to build to destructive proportions? Will the characters make smart decisions? Do they know themselves well enough to be able to make smart decisions?
This author has written an engaging story, and that's what a novel should ultimately be -- a good story, a "page-turner." This novel also forces us to comtemplate the intense psychological insecurities that drive these characters on, insecurities that will likely resonate in the reader as well.
